Thanking our wonderful volunteers

As Volunteers Week approaches, we at AJR get busy planning our Volunteer Thank You events. Each June we arrange something special to acknowledge the remarkable work of our volunteers.

Our London event took place at South Hampstead Synagogue, where we were entertained by Miles Mendlin on Jazz Guitar. 22 year old Miles is already a veteran on the Jazz scene, and has been gigging since the age of 14! He is 3rd generation; his grandfather having survived in hiding in Germany throughout the war.

Volunteer Gary Fisher brought his incredible Haggadah, fresh from being restored in BBC’s Repair Shop. Gary’s grandparents had kept it throughout their incarceration in Theresienstadt camp, and the story of its miraculous survival was so very moving.

In Manchester we were hosted by the House of Books and Friends, a beautiful Victorian building that was once home to a Gentleman’s Club. Volunteer Francine White entertained us with talk of her exciting life as an international entertainment journalist. We were enthralled at her tales of interviewing stars such as Dame Joan Collins, Robert De Niro and Donny Osmond! We also heard from our Yorkshire social worker, Chris Tweddell. Chris emphasised the benefit to clients that volunteers give.

We are always looking for new volunteers. We offer training and lots of support – so please let us know if you can help us. If you would like to volunteer, or know someone else who would, please contact Fran Horwich either by email [email protected] or on 07961015603.
